Arc Flash Awareness

Course Overview

This online Arc Flash Awareness course is designed for electricians, trade assistants and tradespeople who work on or near commercial and industrial electrical equipment. It provides a thorough grounding in what arc flash is, how and why it occurs, the energy and thermal forces involved, and the risk management framework — including PPE selection — that must be applied before any work near energised equipment begins

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • What arc flash and arc blast are, how they occur, and the types of electrical systems and environments where the risk is present
  • The products and characteristics of an arc flash event — including arc plasma, the vaporisation of conductive materials, the generation of molten metal and shrapnel, toxic gases, and the intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation produced during an arc flash incident
  • Incident energy and heat flux — what these terms mean, how incident energy is measured (in calories per centimetre squared), how it varies with distance from the arc source, and why understanding incident energy is the foundation of correct PPE selection and arc flash boundary determination
  • The common causes of arc flash including the tasks most likely to trigger an arc flash event such as inspections, racking, switching and testing on energised equipment
  • Hazard management for arc flash —applying the hierarchy of controls (including the preference for de-energisation and isolation over working live), and how arc flash boundaries — the restricted approach boundary, arc flash boundary and limited approach boundary — are determined and enforced
  • The four categories of arc flash PPE — the minimum arc ratings (in cal/cm²) that apply to each category, the types of garments, face protection and equipment included in each category, and the conditions under which each PPE category is required based on incident energy analysis or arc flash PPE tables

Program Duration

The course is self-paced and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and Participants have 3 months to complete after enrolment.
