Asbestos Awareness

Industrial machinery processing materials amidst dust and sunlight.

Course Overview

This online Asbestos Awareness course provides an introductory overview of how to identify and manage the risks associated with both friable and non-friable asbestos-containing materials. It covers the properties and characteristics of ACM, where it is commonly found, the health hazards associated with exposure, the controls that must be in place before work begins, and the legislative requirements that apply across Australian states and territories.

The course is suitable for anyone who performs work in or around houses, buildings or other structures where asbestos may be present — including construction and demolition workers, trade contractors, maintenance and facilities personnel, government and defence workers, and mine site employees working in or around older infrastructure. Completion of this course helps employers meet their legal obligation to provide asbestos awareness training under the Model WHS Regulations and relevant state and territory legislation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • The properties and characteristics of friable and non-friable asbestos-containing materials (ACM) — what makes each type hazardous, how they differ in terms of risk and handling requirements, and why disturbing ACM without the correct controls in place can have serious and irreversible health consequences
  • Where asbestos is commonly found in Australian workplaces and structures — including the building materials, products and locations most likely to contain ACM in residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure settings built before 2003
  • The health hazards associated with asbestos exposure — including the diseases caused by inhaling asbestos fibres (mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer), the latency period between exposure and diagnosis, and why there is no safe level of exposure to airborne asbestos fibres
  • The steps required to manage and mitigate asbestos risks before and during work — including how to identify suspected ACM, when to stop work and seek further assessment
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for working near ACM — including the correct type of respiratory protection, protective clothing and disposal procedures, and donning and doffing procedures
  • The Australian legislative framework for managing asbestos in the workplace — including the obligations of PCBUs and workers under the Model WHS Regulations, the Code of Practice for the Management and Control of Asbestos in the Workplace, and the licensing requirements that apply to asbestos removal work in each state and territory
