This online Chemical Safety and Handling Awareness course gives workers across all industries a comprehensive foundation in the safe use, storage and handling of hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods. It covers everything from understanding how chemicals enter the body and affect health, through to reading Safety Data Sheets, interpreting GHS labels, applying the hierarchy of controls, and responding safely to a chemical emergency.

The course is aligned with the Australian Model WHS Regulations and the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. It is suitable for workers at all experience levels across manufacturing, construction, agriculture, healthcare, hospitality, transport, resources and any other industry where chemicals are present.

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

• How hazardous chemicals enter the body through different exposure pathways — inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption and injection — and the acute and chronic health effects that can result from chemical exposure in the workplace
• The Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals — what it is, how it works, and how to identify and interpret the GHS hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements and precautionary statements found on chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets
• Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) codes and symbols — how dangerous goods are classified under the ADG Code, what the different class labels and placards mean, and how the ADG classification system relates to GHS in an Australian workplace context
• How to read and interpret a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — including the purpose and structure of each of the 16 sections, how to locate critical safety information quickly, and the legal obligation on PCBUs to maintain a current SDS register for all hazardous chemicals in the workplace
• Chemical compatibility, segregation, storage, preparation and handling — including how to identify incompatible chemicals, the requirements for safe storage and separation of dangerous goods, and the practical precautions that apply when preparing and handling hazardous substances
• Risk management and hazard control using the hierarchy of controls — from elimination and substitution through to engineering controls, administrative measures and the correct selection, use, care and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for chemical hazards
• The Australian WHS legislative framework as it applies to hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods — including the obligations of PCBUs and workers under the Model WHS Act and Regulations, and relevant Codes of Practice for managing risks of hazardous chemicals in the workplace
• Basic emergency response procedures for chemical incidents — including first response firefighting for chemical fires, basic first aid for chemical exposure, and the steps for a safe and controlled evacuation when a chemical emergency occurs 

The course is self-paced and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and Participants have 3 months to complete after enrolment.
