HLTPAT010 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing

Course Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing.

This unit applies to individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Developed to meet legislative requirements for drug testing in accordance with Australian Standards: AS/NZS 4308 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine & AS 4760 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluid.

The course covers the following units of competency:

Enrolment into the course requires a learner to:

  • Be 18 years of age (Proof of Age or Drivers Licence Required)
  • Basic language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret workplace procedures, safety data sheets communicate with other workers and complete workplace and chain of custody forms.
  • Learners should have digital literacy skills broadly equivalent to Australian Core Skills Framework Digital Literacy Level 2. This means they can complete familiar and routine digital tasks using clear instructions and seek assistance when an unfamiliar problem occurs. 
  • A laptop or desktop computer is strongly recommended. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing all training and assessment activities.

HLTPAT010 includes practical assessment. Learners must demonstrate the collection and documentation processes specified in the unit’s assessment requirements.

Before training, learners will receive instructions covering:

  • Required urine and oral-fluid collection devices 
  • Breath-alcohol testing equipment 
  • Personal protective equipment and infection-control supplies 
  • Chain-of-custody and collection documentation 
  • Camera positioning for live observation 
  • Requirements for other people participating in the simulated collection activities 

Learners should not enrol until they understand the equipment and practical-participant requirements.

Equipment and practical assessment requirements

This course is delivered through a scheduled, live and interactive Google Meet session facilitated by Andatech Team on behalf of METEX Solutions Pty Ltd.

Learners must attend and participate for the full scheduled session. The course includes trainer-led instruction, demonstrations, practical specimen-collection activities, completion of chain-of-custody documentation and formal assessment.

This is live online training and is not a fully self-paced course.


Indicative duration: 8 hours of live online training, plus any required pre-course learning or assessment activities.

Learners must successfully complete all knowledge and practical assessment requirements. Additional time or reassessment may be required where competency is not demonstrated during the scheduled session.

Learners may participate from locations across Australia, provided they have:

  • A private and suitable area for training and practical assessment 
  • A computer or suitable device with a camera, microphone and speakers 
  • Reliable internet access 
  • Access to Google Meet 
  • The required testing equipment and documentation 
  • The required number of participants for the practical collection activities 

Learners are responsible for confirming that their location, equipment and technology are suitable before the course commences.

Assessment includes:

  • Knowledge questions 
  • Scenario-based activities 
  • Completion of collection and chain-of-custody documentation 
  • Live observation of urine specimen collection 
  • Live observation of oral-fluid specimen collection 
  • Live observation of breath testing
    Responses to routine and non-routine collection situations 

Practical assessment is conducted live through Google Meet. Learners must keep their camera operating and position it so the trainer and assessor can clearly observe each required activity.
Competency is not awarded solely for attending the online session. Learners must successfully complete every required assessment activity.
