Fire Fighting Awareness

Industrial machinery processing materials amidst dust and sunlight.

Course Overview

This online First Attack Fire Fighting Awareness course provides workers with the knowledge to correctly identify, select, and safely use portable firefighting equipment — including fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and hose reels — during an initial response to a fire emergency. It also covers the fundamentals of fire behaviour, how fires are detected, and — critically — when to attack and when to retreat.

The course is suitable for workers across the construction, mining, resources and industrial sectors, and is ideal as a refresher and to maintain current competency.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • General fire awareness — including the common causes and indicators of fire in construction, mining and industrial environments — and how fires are detected through alarm systems, visual cues, and detection equipment
  • The characteristics of fire — including the fire triangle, how fire behaves as it develops, the classification of fire types (Class A through F), and why understanding fire behaviour is the foundation of a safe and effective first attack response
  • The types of first attack equipment available in Australian workplaces — including portable fire extinguishers (and how to select the correct type for the class of fire), fire blankets and fire hose reels — covering the purpose, safe handling and correct application of each
  • How to safely attack a fire in its early stages using the correct equipment and technique, including maintaining a safe approach, applying the PASS technique for extinguishers, and the importance of always keeping an exit behind you
  • When to retreat — recognising the signs that a fire has grown beyond first attack capability, understanding your personal safety limits, and the actions to take when withdrawal is the right decision
