H2S Awareness

Industrial machinery processing materials amidst dust and sunlight.

Course Overview

This online Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Awareness course gives workers across all industries at risk of H2S exposure the knowledge to identify where the gas may be present, understand the hazards it presents at different concentrations, apply appropriate risk controls, use gas detection equipment correctly, and respond safely in the event of an emergency. It is suitable for workers at all levels of experience and requires no prior chemistry or gas safety knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • The chemical properties, characteristics and behaviours of hydrogen sulphide — including its physical state, density relative to air (why it accumulates in low-lying areas and confined spaces), flammability, odour threshold versus hazardous concentration levels, and why it cannot be relied upon as a self-warning agent at dangerous concentrations
  • The common origins and sources of H2S across multiple industries — including natural geological sources, bacterial decomposition of organic matter, and process-generated H2S in oil and gas, wastewater, mining and agricultural environments — and the specific locations and leak points where H2S is most likely to be encountered
  • The hazard thresholds that define safe and unsafe H2S concentrations — including Short Term Exposure Limits (STEL), Time-Weighted Averages (TWA), Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) and Upper Explosive Limit (UEL)
  • How to apply risk management processes to H2S hazards using the hierarchy of controls — from elimination through to personal protective equipment (PPE) including supplied air breathing apparatus and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • The physiological effects of H2S exposure on the human body — the symptoms produced at progressive concentration levels from low-level irritation through to olfactory fatigue, respiratory distress, loss of consciousness and rapid fatality
  • The emergency response procedures that apply when H2S is detected or a worker is overcome
  • The types of gas detectors used to monitor for H2S in Australian workplaces — including fixed detection systems, portable single-gas and multi-gas detectors, and personal monitors — covering units of measurement (ppm), alarm set points, calibration requirements and sampling techniques for accurate and reliable detection
