Heat Stress Awareness

Industrial machinery processing materials amidst dust and sunlight.

Course Overview

This online Heat Stress Awareness course is essential for anyone working in hot or thermally challenging conditions. It covers the full spectrum of heat-related illness — from early warning signs through to heat stroke — and gives workers and supervisors the knowledge to recognise contributing risk factors, implement preventative measures, and respond appropriately when a colleague shows signs of heat illness.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • What heat stress is and the progressive stages of heat-related illness — from cramps and feeling faint through to heat exhaustion and heat stroke — including the physiological tipping points that distinguish a manageable condition from a medical emergency
  • Basic human physiology and thermoregulation — how the body generates and dissipates heat, the role of sweating, blood flow and core temperature regulation, and why the body's cooling mechanisms can fail under sustained thermal load
  • The signs and symptoms of heat illness at each stage — including muscle cramps, heavy sweating, rapid breathing and fast weak pulse in heat exhaustion, through to dry skin, a rapid strong pulse, dizziness, nausea, confusion and loss of consciousness in heat stroke — and why early recognition is critical to preventing a serious outcome
  • The contributing factors that increase heat illness risk — personal factors (age, fitness, acclimatisation, hydration, medications), environmental factors (ambient temperature, humidity, radiant heat, airflow) and work-related factors (workload, clothing, duration of exposure) — and how these factors interact to elevate risk beyond what temperature alone would suggest
  • Preventative measures for managing heat stress in the workplace — including work scheduling, acclimatisation programs, rest and shade provisions, hydration protocols, buddy systems and engineering controls — and the basic first aid response for each stage of heat illness, including when to call for emergency assistance
