Crystalline Silica Awareness & Control for Mines in NSW

Course Overview

METEX Solutions has developed a online course designed to meet the NSW Regulator’s crystalline-silica training duty for workers who may be involved in, or exposed to, high-risk processing of a crystalline silica substance (CSS). The program is delivered to ensure your workforce understands the health risks and the proper use of required risk controls, as specified in s529CD.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course Participants will be able to:

  • Recognise CSS and “processing”: identify materials ≥1% crystalline silica and tasks that constitute processing (e.g., crushing, cutting, drilling, tunnelling, quarrying).
  • Explain health risks of RCS including signs and symptoms of silicosis.
  • Apply site controls for “controlled processing”: isolation, enclosed cabins with HEPA, wet suppression, on-tool extraction, or LEV; and when RPE (AS/NZS 1716/1715) is required.
  • Identify “high-risk” CSS processing using the regulator’s assessment factors (form, % silica, frequency/duration, ≥½ WES likelihood, monitoring history, incident history)—and record the assessment.
  • Understand plan & system requirements: what must be in the Silica Risk Control Plan (or Air Quality/Other Airborne Contaminants PHMP) and how workers must be provided access to and work in accordance with it.
  • Know monitoring & reporting duties: air monitoring of SEGs, reporting WES exceedances to the Regulator, and providing health monitoring for workers doing high-risk processing
  • Use RPE correctly: selection, fit-checks/fit-testing, and clean-shave requirements in line with AS/NZS 1715.
  • Meet record-keeping expectations: training records retained while engaged and for 5 years after the worker ceases, available for inspection.

Program Duration

The course takes approximately 1 hours to complete and Participants have 3 months to complete after enrolment.

Program Dates

The course is available immediately after the course fee payment and is fully online.
